Eugenia Buchanan
(1905-1990)
Eugenia Buchanan was born on July 15, 1905, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Claude Eugene Buchanan and Corinne Margaret Swift. Her father was 33 years old at the time of her birth, and her mother was 24.
Education and Early Career
Eugenia pursued a life devoted to both the arts and education. In the late 1930s and 1940s, she sang professionally, specializing in opera.
She later turned her focus to academics, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University and a Master of Arts from Middlebury College in 1955. Continuing her studies abroad, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Madrid in 1961.
Eugenia taught Spanish at several institutions, including Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio (1962–1967), Flagler College (1967–1968), and later at a state college in Pennsylvania.
Later Years and Retirement
She retired from teaching in 1973. In her retirement years, she lived in Beaufort, South Carolina, and Green Valley, Arizona, before moving to retirement communities in Columbia, South Carolina, and later in Laurel, Maryland.
