Thomas Joshua Buchanan

Thomas Joshua Buchanan was born on June 12, 1848, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Henry Franklin Buchanan and Frances Abbott. His father was 24 years old at the time of his birth, and his mother was 29.

He first married Josephine Bowie on December 25, 1870. Following her death on April 30, 1872, he later married Nellie A. Ward on May 6, 1874.

Military Service

During the final year of the Civil War, Thomas enlisted from Warren County, Georgia, as a private in Company I, 1st Regiment Georgia Militia, on July 22, 1864. He remained in service until the war’s conclusion and was paroled at Atlanta, Georgia, in May 1865.
